6 Investments that Save the Planet and Your Pocket

There are lots of small, everyday purchases you can make that can help you live a more sustainable (and less expensive life). If you're ready to take it to the next level, and have some cash saved up, here are 6 larger investments you can make that will help you save even more money, and minimise your carbon footprint.

1. Solar Panels

Installing solar panels do cost a bit upfront, but will significantly, if not entirely, offset your electricity bill. It will usually take under a decade for the solar panels to pay for themselves in bill savings, so if you own your home and plan to stay there long-term, solar panels could be an excellent investment.

2. Double Glaze your Windows

Double glazing your windows will mean your hose will be better insulated - it will stay cooler in summer, and warmer in winter, meaning you will be reaching for the A/C remote less, and paying less in heating and cooling bills. Double glaze also has the added benefit of minimising sound, and excellent bonus if you live near a busy road.

3. Permeable Paving for your Driveway

Permeable paving is paving that allows water to be absorbed through it, rather than sitting on top. Permeable paving is more expensive than regular paving, but you will not need to pay more for a drainage system. Permeable paving has been shown to reduce the risk of flooding around your home, and has the capability to filter and collect water which can be reused on your garden or pot plants.

4. Wooden Furniture

Purchasing furniture made from natural substances like wood is more eco-friendly than a plastic alternative. You will also have the chance to reuse or recycle old furniture. If you are able to, buying older, well-made wooden furniture will mean you can use it for potentially decades. They don't make them like that at IKEA!

5. Wool Stuffed Materials

Using wool pillows and bedding in your home can not only last longer than cotton (meaning less need for repurchase!), but is also a more sustainable material. There is also research that claims wool is more healthy for your family, as it can protect you against bed mites, and is less likely to cause allergies and asthma.

6. Recycled Glass Tiles

Using glass tiles in your kitchen or bathroom will make surfaces significantly easier to clean (cutting down on your scrubbing time). They will also last longer than ceramic, and do not soak up water in the same way. This means less mould and bacteria build up, and also longevity!
