The Restart Grant

This month we're talking all things grants! There are countless grants available through the State and Federal Government - most of which, Australian's won't have heard of. But some of these grants could give you the opportunity to start a business, boost a business, or give someone a chance.

What is it?

The Restart Grant is a Federal grant that encourages businesses to employ mature-aged workers. As the retirement age increases, as does the percentage of mature-aged workers in Australia. Unfortunately, if someone has been out of the work force for a number of years and is job seeking over the age of 50, the chances of finding employment are low. The Restart Grant is a wage subsidy grant that is offered to businesses who employ workers over the age of 50.

Who qualifies?

If you own a private business and have an Australian Business Number (ABN), you are eligible to apply for the Restart Grant. A business will only be eligible for the Restart Grant once per job seeker. The job advertised must offer at least 20 hours per week over a six month period, and be ongoing, not a contracted position. To qualify for the grant, you must be registered with an employment services provider. Other eligibility stipulations may apply, depending on the businesses circumstances.

How can I get it?

The payment can be up to $10 000 and may be awarded after a business employs someone over the age of 50. Additionally, JobActive can provide you with resources and information to help you find mature aged workers who are qualified and a good fit for the job. JobActive can connect you with a provider who will recommend a shortlist of suitable candidates at no cost to you. After hiring, you will be ale to apply for the Restart Grant within 12 weeks of the start date of employment.
