On Tuesday we released a list of six items that usually won't live up to the hype after you purchase them. Today, we have compiled a list of six more.

purchases won't be worth the hype

1. Cocktail Making Equipment

Cocktail shakers and muddlers are a purchase a lot of us will make when setting up a new kitchen, or preparing for a party. A lot of the time, they will be used once before being pushed to the back of the cupboard to collect dust and never be used again. This is one example of a product that is not necessary for one to have. You can improvise with containers, glasses, and other utensils to put together a cocktail that tastes just as good as one made in a shaker.

2. Journals

Journals are another typical New Year’s Resolution purchase we make after vowing to start journaling and reflecting on our day every night. If journaling is a habit you’d like to take up, try it out in an old exercise book you already have, or better yet, use your computer! Keeping a digital diary has many benefits over a paper one. You will be able to easily access it any time, you can save it to the cloud or on a hard drive to lessen the chances of misplacing it, and you will be doing the environment and your wallet a favour by not buying more paper products!

3. Specialty Furniture

When we move into a new home, we will often want to start fresh with our furniture, and sometimes this will mean novelty, vintage, or oddly shaped items. While this might bring a certain individuality to your home, you will often find that specialty furniture like this will not be all that practical. Stick to the basics to begin with, and consider keeping to a subtle and neutral theme. This will ensure your furniture doesn’t age as much, and you will be able to move it from house to house with you.

4. Workout DVDs

These DVDs will more often than not sit in a garage or in a cupboard under the TV for so long that they will be forgotten about. Workout DVDs are one of many products that the internet has given us no need for. Thousands of unique workout videos are available to you for free on YouTube, and some fitness professionals and celebrity trainers will even post free workout videos on their social media accounts, so make sure you check there before making a purchase!

diaries planners calendars

5. Diaries and Planners

Calendars, planners, and diaries are another one of those good-intentioned purchases. We sometimes think that all we need to get organised is a nice looking diary or calendar, but often this is misdirected. It is best to change a habit before making purchases. Try using the calendar on your phone, or downloading a few different apps to see if one works for you. Be sure to begin establishing a habit of writing down appointments before jumping in and making a purchase. Additionally, it pays to shop around when looking for a diary, as some can be quite pricey!

6. Post-It Notes in Multiple Shapes

On a similar note to diaries, we can find ourselves getting carried away with the purchasing of items like Post-It notes, thinking that the simple act of buying them (usually in bulk) will make us more organised. This is usually not the case, and we will find ourselves with a draw dedicated to Post-Its in different colours, shapes, and sizes that we don’t use. Be mindful when browsing through the stationery isle of your supermarket, as the products are marketed to you as life-altering items that will change your study space and productivity forever. Many of these tools can improve your organisation, when used effectively, but they can often simply be a distraction and a money-waster.
