You find a company you feel is a good fit for you, and you make an appointment. The day of the appointment comes, you look up the address, drive to the building, and find a carpark. You go inside, are directed to the desk of your consultant. You walk down the hallway and sit down at her desk, and she asks about your situation. In the age of social media, we only show our highlight reel to our friends, family and followers. Firstly, and most importantly, in order for a debt consultant to do their job most effectively, they need to know what they’re working with. It is vital to disclose all relevant information in order to receive the help you need. Consultants can only deal with the information you give them. In order to reach your goal of becoming debt free, they need to know about all your debts. Keeping secrets will only affect your situation negatively in the long run. 2. Consultants aren’t there to judge or reprimand you. It is not the job of the consultant to tell you off for debts incurred, or money mistakes. Their job is to help you pay off your debt and rectify any mistakes made. Your consultant knows what’s done is done, and are only concerned with moving forward and taking action to get you debt free! 3. They’ve seen it all before, and the chances are they’ve seen someone in more debt than you. Debt consultants see hundreds, if not thousands, of people in debt every year. Just like a doctor who has seen hundreds of odd rashes, debt consultants will not be phased or surprised by your debt. 4. Unload your burdens. It can be a relief to come clean about debt to someone else. It can be a huge mental burden to carry around debt, especially if you are keeping it a secret from family and friends. Telling a third party with no connections to your personal life can make you feel like you’ve already made a huge step in the right direction. Consultants are there to support and advise you, and being honest will be the first step of your journey to a debt-free life. 5. The truth will come out eventually! At some time or another, anything you’ve hidden about your debt will surface. It will be a lot easier for both you and your consultant if you are honest about all debts from the beginning. This way you can avoid having to come clean at a later time. 6. It will be the first day of the rest of your life, start it out on the right foot! Seeing a debt consultant can give you a new beginning.
