I've had many questions over the years about whether one partner's bad credit will affect the other partners credit history. The short answer to the question is no. In Australia credit histories are maintained in individually.

In Australia everyone has a separate credit history in their own name. These credit histories contain information on your residential address history, what debts you've applied for, the payment history of all your debts, what debts have been defaulted and any insolvency activity. So there is not a record of your partner on your credit history. There are however two main ways that your partners credit history can affect you.

Credit histories record the payment history of joint debts. If your partner is terrible at making payments this will be reflected in the payment record on your credit history. The other way your partners poor credit history will affect you is in joint applications where both your credit histories will be looked at.

It maybe that you're better off applying for debt in your individual name if your partner has a horrible credit history. However, be careful if your partner has a terrible credit history and wants you to apply for debt in your name this should be a huge red flag. We see a lot of people who get left holding the bag after a partner with crappy credit got them to apply for debt in their name.
